Over The Hump

Over the Hump is the Indie 500 show’s Wednesday edition. DJs Tanner, Gemma, and White Noise are in the studio every Wednesday from 7-9 bringing you indie and alternative tunes that will make your ears smile. From the new releases to classic indie jams, Over the Hump strives to provide two hours of music worth listening to. Commentary on music, movies, TV shows and current events always find their way into the mix but we always know when to stop running our lips and get back to spinning some future hits. Listen in, make requests, and have some fun with us. The school week can be a bummer, but every Wednesday night we’re over the hump and the weekend’s coming on fast.

Black Light Dinner Party has been stuck in my head nonstop lately. The New York electronica outfit recently self-released their self-titled vinyl EP and I can't get enough of it. If you can't obtain a physical copy, the band offers links to all the songs on their website here. The video for my favorite song off the album, "Older Together", is posted below. If you want an idea of how the band sounds, think a perfect mix between Passion Pit and Crystal Castles. And if you're waiting for Passion Pit's follow-up to "Manners" so eagerly as I am, this group will definitely provide you with enough sweet sounds to get you by until it arrives.

Sleigh Bells, the noise rock duo that we here at Over the Hump fell in love with after the release of their album "Treats" in 2010 are releasing their new album "Reign of Terror" this upcoming Tuesday. Expect us to play a lot of new tracks from the album over the next couple weeks, but if you just can't wait for Tuesday like us, The New York Times is streaming the album in it's entirety on their site, complimented by a great article on the group. And from a first listening perspective, this album is reeeaaal gooood.  Here's the new video for "Comeback Kid". Girls jumping on beds with rifles? Alright.

Craig Finn, lead singer of alternative outfit the Hold Steady, put out his first solo release Clear Heart Full Eyes on January 24th. The singer, whose band is well known for their upbeat music complemented by dystopian and at times downer lyrics, makes a clear departure from the Hold Steady sound. Mainly, he slows it down and keeps it there. However, this slowing of pace is far from a bad thing. With the music taking somewhat of a backseat to the lyrics, the listener is able to appreciate Finn’s always fantastic words even more. A mixture of somber, humble, regretful and religious themes become evident in the opening track, “Apollo Bay” and stay very much intact for the remainder of the album. Finn sings in the opening song, “All twelve apostles were convinced that they were walking with their savior. Gonna drive around. Gonna come down the coast by myself.” With this honest understanding of mortality, one can tell this album is written by a solo artist. Standout tracks like “No Future” and “Rented Room” reflect on the hardships of living on your own and dealing with what life hands you. On “Not Much Left of Us”, the album’s final track, Finn observes, “Sometimes lonely is easy, sometimes together’s too tough. There’s not much left of us.”  While these songs could individually find themselves on a Hold Steady album, they, compiled as they are, could never be a Hold Steady album. Each flows into the next like chapters in a novel, dependent on what came before and what will come after. And while Clear Heart Full Eyes isn’t the happiest of albums, Finn’s recognition and remembrance of good times passed have the ability to stir up memories of your own. For a first solo effort, this album is very enjoyable to listen to and you’ll find yourself doing just that over and over again.
